The exercise of renovation is used to re-examine life-cycle of an apartment typology, at a programmatic and spatial level. With the whole length of the apartment facing east, the spatial overhaul revolved around capitalising on the east light in balconies. Balconies were elevated and chamfers with strategic angles employed, making these volumes a consistent element across the east façade of the house. Much like the Indian threshold spaces like ‘otla/ katte/thinnai’, which are raised platforms, the variety in scale and levels allows for multi-functional use and interpretation.
